Railway buffer stop

Buffer stops are devices installed at the end of railway tracks to prevent rolling stock from running beyond the track limits. They ensure safe restriction of wagon and locomotive movement, reducing impact loads during stopping.

Description and design

Buffer stops are manufactured in accordance with DSTU GOST 16438-89 and are classified into several types — fixed, anchored, spring-loaded, hydraulic, and frame-type. The design is selected depending on the mass and speed of the rolling stock, track type, and operating conditions. All buffer stops are designed to absorb impact and longitudinal loads from wagons and locomotives.

• Frame-type stops — welded steel structures for station and industrial tracks;
• Anchored and spring-loaded stops — equipped with damping elements to soften impact;
• Reinforced concrete dead ends — used on permanent sections with high loads;
• Hydraulic buffer stops — for mainline routes and depots with intensive traffic.

Application

Buffer stops are used at stations, classification yards, access tracks, and industrial railways. They ensure safe operation of railway infrastructure by preventing rolling stock derailment or overrunning. Installed at the ends of depot tracks, yards, freight terminals, and maintenance areas.
