Railway spike hammer — a hand tool used for the installation and maintenance of railway tracks to drive in and remove railway spikes. It is used by track and installation crews when fastening rails to wooden sleepers through base plates. Provides precise and powerful impact without deforming spikes or fastening elements.
Railway spike hammers are manufactured in accordance with TU 32 TsP 587-78 (GOST 2310-77) and consist of a massive metal head and a durable wooden handle. One end of the head has a smooth striking face, while the opposite end features a projection with serrations or a notch for prying and extracting spikes. The head is made of tool steel with hardened striking surfaces to extend service life.
The spike hammer is used for fastening rails to wooden sleepers as well as for dismantling old connections. It is applied on main lines, station tracks, and industrial railways during routine and major maintenance works. Used together with spikes sized 14×130 mm, 16×165 mm, and other standard sizes employed in conventional rail fastenings.
