Railway chisel — a hand tool used for the installation, dismantling, and maintenance of railway tracks. It is designed for cutting metal components (rail spikes, bolts, cotter pins), removing burrs, trimming metal residues, and cleaning rail elements. It is an essential tool for track maintenance and welding operations on railways.

Description and design

The railway chisel is manufactured in accordance with GOST 7211-86 from tool steel. The working edge is hardened to high hardness to ensure impact resistance and wear durability, while the striking end is tempered to prevent cracking during operation. The blade has a wedge-shaped profile, providing efficient cutting of metal and other materials.

Manufactured by hot forging followed by heat treatment;
Cutting edge is ground and sharpened at a 60° angle;
Hardening of the working edge — up to 55 HRC;
The striking head has rounded edges for safe operation;
Coating — protective paint or phosphated finish to prevent corrosion.

Application

The railway chisel is used during maintenance and repair of railway tracks for cutting rail spikes, straightening metal components, removing corroded fasteners, and cleaning surfaces. It is used together with hammers, sledgehammers, and other hand tools during major and routine maintenance of the track superstructure.
