Track pointed pickaxe — a hand tool used for maintenance and repair of railway tracks. It is used for loosening the ballast layer, excavating soil, tamping sleepers, and removing compacted material under rails. An essential tool for track maintenance and repair crews in railway infrastructure.
The pointed track pickaxe is manufactured in accordance with DSTU GOST R 55162-2012 (GOST 11042-90) and consists of a metal head with two working ends and a wooden handle. One end is made as a pointed tip for breaking crushed stone and hard soil, while the other is a flat blade for trimming and cleaning. The metal part is produced from high-strength carbon steel and is heat-treated and hardened to increase wear resistance.
Pointed track pickaxes are used during routine and major railway track maintenance, ballast installation and cleaning, sleeper tamping, and installation of rails and turnouts. They are applied as part of manual track tools, along with crowbars, shovels, and sledgehammers, for earthworks and auxiliary operations.
